TEMPLE — The Springtime Ice Cream Open House will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, at Koviashuvik Local Living School, Lake Drive. There is no charge to attend.
Visitors are invited to come to the school, turn the crank and make old fashioned ice cream with ice from the school’s new ice house and cream from a local farm. There will be live music, ice cream and tours of the school grounds.
The tour includes a stone root cellar, vegetable gardens, nut orchard, edible landscaping, earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, solar dehydrator, solar hot water system, alternative cooking technologies, composting toilet, log cabin and ice house.
The school also offers a program titled Family Sustainability Stay: An Educational Vacation. Over a three-day stay, families can learn low-tech, low-cost ways to simplify life, or just do meaningful activities and chores outdoors.
Accommodations include a large canvas wall tent with wood floor, outdoor kitchen, and composting toilet, and Sustainability Stay projects vary with the season and the interests of each family.
Cost is $650 per family or $450 a family schedules to come at the same time as a second family. Families with over five members pay $8 per day for food for every additional member. Available dates are July 30-Aug.1, or Aug. 24-26. Additional dates may be scheduled to accommodate requests.
