LEWISTON — Road construction delays should not be too bad for the week on either side of July 4 — once you get into the city.

The two biggest road projects of the summer, along Lincoln and Lisbon streets, will be ongoing through the summer.

Most city paving projects scheduled so far have wrapped up. The rest will wait for later this month, after the city awards contracts for the summer paving program.

“We are right in the middle of awarding a new contract,” engineering technician Wes Enman said. “So, it’s all paperwork between us next week. After we meet with them, we’ll have a tentative schedule for the rest of the summer.”

City crews will be wrapping up some ongoing sewer line projects along Oak Street and sidewalk work on Ash Street and could schedule some final paving along Cotton Road.

The biggest project involves repaving Route 196 between Westminster Street in Lewiston and River Road in Lisbon. Crews were scheduled to begin grinding and removing the old asphalt Sunday at both ends. Crews are scheduled to wrap up that project by the end of July.

Most other projects will wait until later in July.

“We may be able to start some the week after, but typically the highway department has to do some work before the paving can get started,” Enman said. “If there’s any drainage pipe work to do, or anything else below the surface, they may do a little of that before the contractor gets started.”

In Auburn, crews will be focusing on ditch work along South Main Street, part of the paving project there, according to city engineer Dan Goyette.

Crews will continue curb work along Auburn’s Winter, Summer and Dennison streets and should finish new sidewalks along New Auburn’s Fifth Street this week. Paving Sunderland Drive, south of Taylor Pond, is scheduled to continue this week as well.

New paving for Park Avenue is scheduled for the week of July 9, Goyette said.
