FRIENDSHIP, Maine — A shed was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon where children had earlier been burning books.

The fire was accidental, according to Friendship Fire Chief Kevin Benner.

Three youths had been in the shed — an approximately 10-by-12-foot building — and had been burning books. The youths thought the fire had been extinguished when they left.

The fire was reported at about 2 p.m.

Knox County Sheriff Paul Spear also responded to the fire. According to the sheriff’s office report, the youths were apologetic. The fire marshal was contacted and is expected to meet with the children in the next few weeks.

The fire occurred on the property of the mother of one of the juveniles.
