AUBURN — On Oct. 8 families, friends, donors and staff gathered at Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice’s Hospice House to cut the ribbon on its new patio. This patio was made possible by generous donations made by Autumn Night Out participants in 2011 who bought rulers, Poland Spring Bottling Co., The Iberdrola USA Foundation, Inc., Fast Breaks HH Deck Fundraiser, Mike’s Water Street Grill, Sparetime Recreation – in memory of Judy Marshall and numerous other donors. There is a plaque in the patio listing all donors.

“This project started out as a dream,” said Karen Flynn, hospice director of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, “and thanks to the hard work of hundreds of community volunteers the dream has been made a reality.”

The ability to reconnect with the outside world is very appreciated by those served at the house; however, for those patients who have reduced mobility and independence, enjoying the tranquil setting has had serious limitations. The new patio is the perfect setting for those patients and their loved ones who are not able to navigate the terrain of the yard and nature walk. Without risk, they can now enjoy fresh air and sunshine, commune with the woodland creatures, watch the changing seasons and find quiet time outside of the confines of four walls. The patio serves to achieve the goal of living and appreciating every day and experiencing life to its fullest.
