LEWISTON — Paving scheduled for Lisbon, Farwell, Main and Sabattus streets promises to snarl traffic next week.
City engineering technician Wes Enman said the four projects are relatively simple: Crews will mill and grind old pavement off stretches of road and put down new asphalt a day or two later.
All four projects should be finished by the end of next week. In the meantime, he urged drivers to plan ahead and expect delays.
“If we can get them to plan ahead and take alternate routes it would be a big help,” Enman said.
Lisbon Street drivers will get a taste of the delays Friday. Utility crews will be working on manhole covers on the inbound lanes between Bleachery Street and Adams Avenue. Inbound traffic will be detoured around the work for four hours beginning at 9 a.m., but the road will be fully open to traffic all weekend.
Crews will close the same Lisbon Street lanes Monday morning. They will grind off the old asphalt and repave the street, which should reopen Wednesday.
Farwell Street is in for similar work Monday through Thursday. Crews will close the northbound lanes, from Webster to Sabattus streets, for the duration and traffic will be detoured around the work.
Two-way traffic will be maintained on Main and Sabattus streets during the work, but traffic on parts of each will be down to one lane in either direction. On Main Street, work will concentrate around either side of Montello Street. It’s scheduled to begin Tuesday morning and wrap up by Thursday.
“Traffic will be heavy, and there will be backups,” Enman said. “We’d really like people to seek an alternate route.”
Sabattus Street will be down to one lane in either direction between Bailey Avenue and Grove Streets on Tuesday through Thursday for grinding and repaving.
