OTISFIELD — On June 23, The Victory Swing Band will return to Otisfield for an encore of last summer’s live jazz performance.

Jean Hankins said the 17-piece band will perform at 7 p.m. in the meetinghouse at the top of Bell Hill Road, one mile off Route 121.

According to band spokesman James Rey, who plays trumpet and flugelhorn, downbeat is at 7 p.m., with two sets divided by a 15-minute intermission.

Hankins said the program will include music from some legendary jazz artists and arrangers such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and Nat King Cole.

“Our goal is to bring the music of what has been referred to as ‘The Great American Song Book’ to our audiences and to entertain and inform them about America’s rich musical heritage,” Rey said.

There will be no admission charge, but donations are encouraged, Hankins said. All proceeds will go toward maintenance and preservation of the meetinghouse.

The building, owned by the Bell Hill Meetinghouse Association since 1927, has served for many years as the second Congregational Church. This year is the 100th anniversary of continuous summer services in the 1839 Bell Hill Meetinghouse.

Hankins said the building features excellent acoustics and was electrified only a few years ago. It also features original box pews. Those attending may wish to add to their evening’s comfort by bringing along a cushion or two, she said. And because there are no screens on the windows, participants might want to use some mosquito spray in case the windows are opened.

Nomad Café in Norway will supply cookies and lemonade at a nominal charge during the intermission. The performance is open to the public.
