AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine ranks 13th among states in a report measuring how well children are doing in health, education and family life.
The annual “Kids Count” report released Monday shows improvement in Maine in some areas such as children’s health, but slips in others such as the number of children living in poverty.
New Hampshire wound up as the top-ranked state, followed by Vermont and Massachusetts. Nevada, Mississippi and New Mexico took the bottom three spots.
Maine ranked No. 1 in health status and No. 6 in family and community. It was ranked in the 20th spot in both education and economic well-being.
The report was released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a private charitable organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged children.
