WATERFORD — There’s a big change taking place on Agriculture & Conservation Day at Waterford World’s Fair this year — it’s going to welcome families. The event is sponsored by the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District and is a wonderful opportunity to bring your whole family to enjoy all that the day has to offer.

Beginning with oxen and draft horse demonstrations at the pulling ring, you will progress through a series of Learning Stations, where your group can observe blacksmithing, bee keeping, vermiculture, animal husbandry and a portable sawmill.

Visit Old McDonald’s Farm to get to know Brendi’s animal friends and the Fiber Tent to learn about the sources and different types of wool. Norway/Paris Fish & Game will be on hand to guide you through the great outdoors, and forestry and soils stations will be doing interactive demonstrations. There will be several areas where the family may participate in creative programs to help children learn about the wonderful world of “outdoors”, such as making a moon journal, playing nature bingo and exploring with a “sandpail list” (a child’s version of the famous “bucket list”).

Fire and Police Departments will also be on hand to help families become familiar with these important and necessary, but often scary, professionals. Children are encouraged to explore and experience these areas.

Pack your lunch and enjoy a picnic, or purchase some of the delicious homemade food and ice cream at the fair. There is no entrance fee for attendees to Agriculture and Conservation Day so bring your family and enjoy the fun of learning in a relaxed atmosphere.

The 2013 Agriculture and Conservation Family Day at Waterford World’s Fair will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19, with Horse and Oxen demonstrations in the pulling ring. You must register at the livestock entrance to get your program guide and map. While you’re there, don’t forget to sign up your group for lots of great door prizes.
