FREEPORT — A microburst during a heavy thunderstorm Friday evening toppled 60 to 75 trees and caused significant damage to campers, cars and buildings at Recompence Campground in Freeport.
Just before 7:30 p.m. Friday, Freeport firefighters and police went to the campground on Burnett Road after receiving reports about a microburst that “tore basically a clear path” through the trees, Deputy Chief Paul Conley of the Freeport Fire Department said Monday.
No injuries were reported, but the significant property damage occurred at the campground, Conley said.
At least one couple was unable to stay overnight at the campground and moved to a local hotel.
Firefighters from Freeport and Brunswick spent several hours accounting for campers and checking on the fallen trees, Conley said.
The storm also set off alarms throughout the town.
