OAKLAND (AP) — A project to remove jagged pieces of steel from beneath the feet of swimmers in Messalonskee Lake in Oakland cost the town more than expected, but the town hopes to recover much of the money by selling the metal.
The metal removal last month cost the town almost $9,000.
Town Manager Peter Nielsen said 14 truckloads of metal were recovered from the bottom of the swim area. Nielsen told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/12AvKdK ) he hopes a substantial portion of the cost can be recouped by selling the recovered steel. Transfer station manager John Thomas is seeking the best price.
The metal was left there a century ago by a cannery at the site. Most had been covered by silt, but some had risen to cause minor injuries to swimmers.
