SCARBOROUGH (AP) — State officials have quarantined a pet store in Scarborough after a dog that was sold last week tested positive for a serious disease.
John Bott, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, said the two-week quarantine was ordered after officials were notified that the 9-week-old puppy was diagnosed with parvovirus, a disease that is highly contagious and can be fatal to dogs.
The store can remain open during the quarantine but cannot sell any puppies.
A Westbrook woman who bought the puppy, named Sophie, said her pet became sick within days and remains hospitalized.
The same store was quarantined for a month in February after a Siberian husky puppy died of parvovirus.
Store officials had no immediate comment. A sign posted Monday said it was closed for “unfortunate circumstances.”
