MEXICO — A 15-year-old Peru boy was injured Monday afternoon when his bicycle  and a tractor-trailer collided on Route 2, Lt. Roy Hodsdon of the Mexico Police Department said.

Hodsdon said the names of those involved would not be released until the preliminary investigation is finished.

The tractor-trailer driver was headed west at around 3 p.m. when, according to witnesses, the bicyclist swerved toward its rear wheels, fell off the bike and hit his head, he said.

The tractor-trailer swerved into the adjacent lane, where a red Ford Ranger traveling east toward Dixfield clipped the left rear bed of the truck. The driver of the Ford Ranger was not injured, although the truck sustained minor damage, Hodsdon said.

“When we arrived on the scene, the (bicyclist) was unconscious, but after awhile, he was alert and able to tell us his name,” Hodsdon said. “Med-Care immediately brought him to Rumford Hospital to treat his head injury.”

Hodsdon later said LifeFlight flew the boy to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Route 2 was closed for more than three hours while Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office assisted in reconstruction of the accident. The Mexico Fire Department and Rumford Police Department assisted in redirecting traffic.

The accident remained under investigation Monday night.
