The new Hannaford store in Turner was recognized Wednesday for its first-in-the-nation cooling and freezing system. Above, Tom Land, who manages the GreenChill Partnership at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, presented GreenChill platinum certification to Kim Kuusela, manager of the Turner Hannaford Supermarket & Pharmacy. The certification, one of only two in the country, recognizes the store’s use of an advanced refrigeration system that is far better for the environment than conventional systems. The store is the first supermarket in the country to cool and freeze food with a system that uses only carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. Traditional refrigeration technologies are prone to refrigerant leaks that both deplete the ozone layer and contribute to climate change. Hannaford opened the 35,000-square-foot store on July 20. Similar CO2 refrigeration units have been employed in northern Europe and Canada.
