WILTON — A Wilton man was found dead in a Weld Road apartment after a nearly five-hour standoff with police Tuesday night.

A State Police Tactical Team made entry into the residence about 11 p.m. and confirmed Raymond Richard, 60, the sole occupant, was deceased, Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox said in a release.

Police went to an apartment at 164 Weld Road about 6 p.m. to investigate a report of domestic violence, she said. They met Richard at the front door, but he would not open the door as they requested.

Instead, he went upstairs inside the residence and within a few minutes police heard a single gun shot from the apartment, she said.

They secured the residence and called for assistance. About a half dozen area tenants were moved from their homes for safety purposes while the State Police Tactical Team responded.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, led by Sheriff Scott Nichols, officers from the Farmington Police Department and the Jay Police Department worked as a team to keep the suspected standoff contained.

An autopsy has been scheduled by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
