The U.S. Supreme Court is currently debating a case that could likely have a profound effect on the nation’s political system and, indirectly, on everyone’s lives.
In the process of deciding McCutcheon v. FEC, the Supreme Court will very likely decide how politicians and political parties are funded. The court has already begun hearing oral arguments that could end up giving America’s wealthy individuals and corporations a green light to contribute limitless funds directly to politicians and political parties.
Conservative judges on the court now want to deregulate both contributions, as well as expenditures. That will result in a system where corruption is enhanced for the rich and powerful.
However, Congress does have the power to establish limits on individual campaign donations to federal candidates as a way of preventing corruption. Elected officials should pass laws with increased limits on political contributions.
