Auburn’s city council held a busy session on Monday night. It had about everything from browntail moths to sidewalks, with a few claims and petitions, before it for consideration. The browntails didn’t get first hearing, but they figured very prominently thru the desire of S.E. Folkins to be named as official city moth collector. In the course of the discussion started by this petition, the spraying machine which had been used by the city in the war against the moth was much praised. The report of the city forester said about 14 per cent of the nests were empty this year as a result of the spraying. The petition for a sidewalk from Summer street to the cemetery was referred to the next city council.

Over 100 persons appeared at the Lewiston office of the Maine Employment Security Commission this morning to report their skills in the garment industry for a special survey which was conducted. The survey was conducted by local MESC personnel “at the request of Lewiston’s Industrial Development Director Samuel Michael,” it was reported by MESC branch manager Paul E. Belanger. Michael, contacted by the Journal this noon, reported that he did ask for such a survey, at the request of a garment firm which is considering locating in this area. Michael reported that he could not divulge the name of the firm or its location at this time. Belanger said the survey was conducted “to find out what we have for experienced people in the garment industry.”

Twin Cities officials hope to reduce the need to put sludge in landfills by giving the treated sewage to contractors and landscapers for spreading around yards and shrubbery. Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority directors yesterday instructed sewage treatment plant officials to see how many companies would want composted sludge for fertilizer. Woodard & Curran Inc. of Portland, an engineering consultant, recommended that the directors build a $1.19 million sludge composting building next year. Sludge would be processed into a material similar to peat moss in the facility.
