MEXICO — A local woman escaped injury late Wednesday morning when the car she was driving slid off Route 120, broke a utility pole and landed in a pool of water next to the Swift River.
Mexico police Officer Derek MacDonald said Crystal Martin, 55, was driving southwest in a 2007 Saturn sports car when she lost control of it on black ice and slush. The front passenger side hit the pole, breaking it, and the car continued 15 to 20 feet down an embankment, landing on its side in the icy water.
A Mexico firefighter said it was a good thing the car didn’t land on its roof and become partially submerged.
The accident occurred at 11:25 a.m. about two miles from the intersection with Route 2. Mexico firefighters limited traffic to one lane before closing the road so Brad Adley of Adley’s Auto Service of Rumford could haul the car up to the road.
Adley went down the slope, pulled a chain from a second Adley’s tow truck, attached it to the car and the second tow truck pulled it up onto Route 120 where it was loaded onto a flatbed. MacDonald said the Saturn was demolished.
A Central Maine Power crew attempted to brace the broken pole, which remained upright.
