AUGUSTA (AP) — Authorities say a man serving a nine-month jail sentence sent 16 letters from behind bars to his 1-year-old daughter, but the messages were really for the little girl’s mom.

Prosecutors said the letters from Robert Vincent Johnson told the woman to avoid cooperating with the district attorney. The 30-year-old Johnson said if authorities couldn’t find the woman, domestic violence charges against him would be dismissed.

The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1i0QZBG ) reported that prosecutors say he was trying to urge the woman to withhold information.

Johnson, of the Madison/Skowhegan area, was sentenced to nine months in jail this week after pleading guilty to a charge of tampering with a victim and violating conditions of release.

Johnson’s attorney said her client was remorseful and ashamed of his actions.
