Darrell Orr and Cathy Messmer perform to “Magic Carpet Ride” during the Dancing with the Staff Grand Finale at Lisbon High School on Wednesday. Orr, director of operations and transportation for the Lisbon School Department, and Messmer, the department’s business manager, made up one of three dance pairs that competed during the championship round for a trophy and “bragging rights.” The Lisbon Drama Club will use proceeds from the event to cover costs associated with the Maine Principals’ Association One-Act State Competition in Yarmouth on Friday. “This is the first time in 10 years that Lisbon has made it to the state competition,” said drama club director Jennifer Fox. Orr and Messmer won enough audience votes to take first place. First-year math teachers Gretchen Ward and Sara Brown placed second and seventh-grade teacher Maddy Cornish teamed up with bus driver/custodian Richard “Rastus” Combs for third.

Darrell Orr was a “nervous wreck” the first time he participated in the “Dancing with the Staff” two years ago. This year Orr and dance partner Cathy Messmer worked with a volunteer choreographer from Alma-Lea’s Dance Studio and brought home the gold.
