POLAND — There is plenty of fine bird real estate available in Poland for birds returning to Maine this spring. Many patrons and friends of Ricker Library have decorated birdhouses to sell at silent auction.
The birdhouses are colorful, fanciful and attractive. Some have shingled roofs, some have shuttered windows, one has brick facing. There is an historical birdhouse made to resemble a one-room school, complete with outhouses (one for girls and one for boys), and another is a house for a “jailbird.” It has bars on the windows.
All of these birdhouses and lots of others, some more suitable for inside locations, can be seen on display at the Alvan Bolster Ricker Memorial Library, 1211 Maine St. Bids for purchase will be taken until April 11.
Winning bids will be awarded during an April 11 program. The program will also feature bird expert, John Weinrich, presenting an illustrated talk, “Backyard Birds.”
Weinrich is a repeat guest of the library, back by popular request. He has interesting stories to tell about the birds in our yards. Bidding will be possible during the evening. The program will be held at Ricker Library from 6:30 to 9 p.m. All are welcome.
- Eagan Whitten, 7, and his sister Annabelle, 3, each decorated a birdhouse. Eagan painted one to blend in with native birch trees. He wanted protection for birds from predators. Annabelle, who is “totally into pigs,” helped to paint a pink pig birdhouse.
