AUGUSTA — People will gather Saturday, May 24, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery to honor and remember the nearly 15,000 veterans buried in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery system by placing American flags on each grave.
The cemetery is off Civic Center Drive in Augusta.
The program will start at 9 a.m. with an opening by Maine Public Safety Pipe and Drum Corps marching down the Avenue of Flags, a prayer, words of thanks from Gov. Paul LePage and/or his wife, first lady Ann LePage.
Last year, more than 400 Maine residents gathered to place flags on veterans’ graves. The volunteers included Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, veterans’ groups and business representatives, according to a news release.
