MEXICO — The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted Tuesday evening to appoint newly elected Selectmen Albert Aniel and Andy Dupuis to consolidation subcommittees.

In September, Municipal Resources, a New Hampshire-based company, provided Rumford and Mexico with a proposal for a comprehensive study on consolidation of services. The boards approved the proposal.

Part of the proposal, according to Don Jutton, president of Municipal Resources, involves setting up subcommittees for different departments within each town.

The subcommittees are Police, Fire and Emergency Management; Parks, Recreation, Union Services and Libraries; Public Works; and Budget, Finance and Town Hall Operations.

Former Selectmen Peter Merrill and George Byam were originally assigned to the Budget, Finance and Town Hall Operations, and Fire and Emergency Management subcommittees, respectively.

Town Manager John Madigan told the board that Aniel and Dupuis would have to be assigned to the positions left vacant by Merrill and Byam, or trade positions with another selectman.

Dupuis said he would sit on the Fire and Emergency Management Subcommittee, while Aniel agreed to sit in on the Budget, Finance and Town Hall Operations Subcommittee.

Merrill, who attended Tuesday’s meeting as a resident, said he would sit in on the Police Department Subcommittee as a resident of Mexico. Selectmen voted to appoint Merrill to the subcommittee.

In other business, the board voted 4-0 to re-elect Selectman Richie Philbrick as chairman, and voted 4-0 to elect Selectman Byron Ouellette as vice chairman.

Selectmen also voted to approve a taxi cab license for resident Charles Proffitt, operating as Veterans Taxi.

Proffitt said he has about five or six years experience driving taxi cabs, and this is his first time operating his own business.

“I have one car right now, and I plan on purchasing another one sometime next week,” Proffitt added.

Ouellette suggested to Proffitt that if he ever needs assistance with the rules and regulations of running a taxi cab business, he should check with Town Clerk Peggy Duguay.

“She knows all the business regulations and whatnot,” Ouellette said. “She’d be a big asset if you ever needed help.”
