1928 – 2014
LEWISTON — Thelma R. Redmun, 86, of Danville passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, surrounded by her family at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion.
She was born in Mechanic Falls on Jan. 3, 1928, daughter of the late Cecil A. and Elnora C. Chilafoux Russell. She was educated in Mechanic Falls schools and graduated as Salutatorian from Mechanic Falls High School in 1946. In May of 1947, she married Alfred E. Redmun, who predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1979. Thelma and Alfie lived and worked on the family dairy farm in Danville where they raised their five children.
Thelma worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Danville for 33 years, retiring as the Postmaster in 1998 at 70 years of age.
Thelma enjoyed lunches with her friends, holidays with her family, bargain shopping and summertime yard sales. She was a talented artist and crafter, especially making quilts. Thelma’s love of music and the arts inspired many of her children and grandchildren to pursue hobbies and careers as singers, musicians, actors and crafters.
She will be remembered as an adventurous and independent woman who was always on the go. Thelma was a dedicated and generous mother, an interested and beloved grammy, a faithful and fun-loving friend, an involved and respected community member and the unofficial “Mayor of Danville.”
Thelma was an active member of the Danville Union Church, a 65-year member of the Danville Grange, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, and a board member of the Danville Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
She is survived by four daughters, Aileen Veilleux and partner, Bill Mickalide, of Auburn, Kathleen “Kathy” Haley and husband, Don, of Danville, Christeen Redmun of Lewiston and Charleen Beal and husband, Alton, of Ellsworth; a son, Fred Redmun of Danville and companion, Cecile Bosse, of Lewiston; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Marianne and Michael Veilleux, Shawna Haley Bear, Russell, Don Jr., and Jonathan Haley, Tammy Proctor and Adam Redmun; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband and a brother, Alton W. Russell.
Thelma’s family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff of St. Mary’s D’Youville Pavilion — 4 West for the love and care given to her during her last 18 months of life. Additionally, we want to thank the the Hospice team provided by Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice for the tender compassion shown to Thelma and the whole family. We thank God for you all.
