AUGUSTA — The Democrat vying for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District seat outpaced her Republican opponent in fundraising over the latest three-month reporting period, according to figures released Tuesday.

Democrat Emily Cain’s campaign said she brought in more than $379,000 during the period that ran from April 1 to June 30. Republican Bruce Poliquin’s team said he raised nearly $296,000 during that time.

But with more than $291,500 left, Poliquin has more cash on hand as the two enter the next stretch of the campaign for Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud’s seat. Cain’s campaign said she had more than $243,000 left at the end of the quarter.

Michaud is leaving Congress to run for governor.

Cain has raised about $870,000 overall, or about $50,000 more than Poliquin has brought in since the beginning of his campaign.

Levi Knapp, Cain’s campaign manager, said in a statement that most of the money Cain has raised has come from within the state. Knapp said Cain is an advocate for Maine’s working class and said she “isn’t afraid to work together for the best interests of Maine people.”

Poliquin’s campaign said his fundraising efforts are gaining momentum, pointing to the $280,000 raised in just 20 days following the June 10 primary.

Campaign manager Matt Hutson said Poliquin is better positioned to win because he has spent less than Cain and has more money left. That shows his ability to be fiscally prudent, like he was as state treasurer, Hutson said.

“Emily Cain has just proven she will pay more to get less,” he said.
