According to Detective Bill Tapley of the Lisbon Police Department, officers arrested Justin Edwards, 23, of Poland, and James Vachon, 22, of 50 Fairmount St. in Lewiston following a chase involving officers from Lisbon, Lewiston and Auburn.
Edwards and Vachon were arrested at Vachon’s residence, Tapley said.
Both were charged with eluding police. Edwards was also charged with burglary and theft from a break-in in Sabattus on Tuesday afternoon. Vachon had arrest warrants charging burglary, violation of bail and probation revocation, Tapley said.
The detective said Edwards and Vachon fled from Lisbon officers following a traffic violation. They abandoned their vehicle in Lewiston and dogs tracked them into the woods where a pair of shoes was found by the Androscoggin River.
According to Tapley, Edwards and Vachon swam across the river where a “good Samaritan” gave the pair a ride back to Lewiston.
After questioning people on the Auburn side of the river, officers found the driver who helped Edwards and Vachon. He led police to where he took the pair.
Officers found Edwards and Vachon, as well as clothing still soaked from their swim. Their car had property believed to have been taken in the Sabattus burglary, Tapley said.
