LIVERMORE FALLS — Everyone is invited to enjoy Odds Bodkin, master storyteller and musician, as he performs “Around the World in Stories” at the grand finale celebration of Treat Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.
“Book A Trip” has taken participants completely around the world and back again, but the SRP officially ended Aug 2. All registered participants need to turn in their reading logs no later than Saturday, Aug. 9, in order to receive the recognition they have earned.
Prior to Bodkin’s performance, this year’s top readers will be announced and rewards given to all who have successfully reached their goal.
For adult readers, the library offers the Maine Readers’ Choice Award and the “Let’s Talk About It” book discussion series from the Maine Humanities Council.
The books nominated for the Maine Readers’ Choice Award have been narrowed down from over 140 to the four finalists and readers get to vote for their favorite. The titles are “The Golem and Jinni” by Helene Wecker, “Benediction” by Kent Haruf, “Transatlantic” by Colum McCann and “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt.
The library has all four books available. During the first two weeks of September, vote for your favorite at the library or at www.mainereaderschoiceaward.org.
The focus of the “Let’s Talk About It” series will be “Refreshing the Whodunit: Moving Beyond Christie and Doyle.” This series provides new and experienced mystery and detective fans with an opportunity for in-depth conversation about how this fiction has incorporated the contemporary world’s globalism.
To refresh the whodunit, participants will read from a selection of novels by writers more marginal and contemporary than Doyle and Christie and ponder questions of the mystery’s relationship to history and culture.
The Maine Humanities Council will be providing the facilitator and copies of the books. The proposed list of titles is as follows: “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice” by Laurie King; “Dance Hall of the Dead” by Tony Hillerman; “The Skull Mantra” by Eliot Pattison; “Cold Day for Murder” by Dana Stabenow and “Murder at the Nightwood Bar” by Katherine V. Forrest.
Preregistration for this book discussion series is required, as spaces are limited. Once a schedule for this series has been confirmed, the library will post it on Facebook, Twitter, in newspapers and in the library.
In preparation for the school year, the library has already purchased the Maine Student Book Award nominees for 2014-15. To find them in the catalog, type MSBA 2014 in the search window and a full list should result.
As autumn approaches, the library is planning the rest of its program schedule. The Knit/Crochet Group will once again be meeting on Tuesdays at 5:30, starting Sept. 9. The library just received a large donation of yarn, which will be available to participants in this group. Volunteer instructors in knitting and crocheting will be available on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This group is for all ages and skill levels. Even if you don’t knit or crochet, you are invited to bring whatever portable craft project you are currently working on.
Preschool Story Time continues on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Family Story Time will return on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. starting Sept. 6.
