WINTHROP — The Winthrop Area Rotary Foundation’s third annual Family Barbecue and Gumbo Festival to End Hunger will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Rambler Football Field, behind the Winthrop Grade School.

The festival features a pig roast, ribs, smoked chicken and sausage gumbo, fireworks, live music and a bounce house. The meal will include vegetarian and gluten-free food options, along with a traditional barbecue menu including collard greens, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, salads, cornbread, desserts and sweet tea.

“Hunger remains a big concern for everyone in America, especially for too many families in our community, most of whom include veterans, seniors, and children,” said Craig Hickman, Foundation chair.

“While we must continue to address emergency food needs in our region, we must also build long-term resources to support food security and local nutrition education. Any proceeds above and beyond the food and supplies used to support the festival to and our annual disbursements to the Winthrop Food Pantry and Winthrop Hot Meal Kitchen will be put into a fund to develop the Winthrop Area Food and Community Center.”

The Food Center will be a food service and education facility featuring a commercial kitchen and community cafe that serves evening meals restaurant-style, a year-round growing facility and outdoor community gardens. It will be a place where people from all walks of life can come together to learn how to grow, prepare, process and preserve nutritious food for themselves and their families.

Tickets are available for $10 per person, $35 per family at Apple Valley Books and Paris Farmers Union in Winthrop, or at the event.
