OWLS HEAD — A 1930 airplane from the Owls Head Transportation Museum received minor damage Saturday evening when it lost power and landed just off the runway at the adjacent Knox County Regional Airport.
No one was injured, but the 1930 Pitcairn single-engine plane was towed from the airport back to the museum, according to airport manager Jeffrey Northgraves.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m., when the plane, piloted by museum volunteer Tom Rudder, lost engine power just as it was taking off from the airport. Rudder was the only person in the plane, and he was not injured.
The plane went onto the grass and into some bushes, Northgraves said. The nose of the plane went down onto the ground.
There also was cosmetic damage to the plane’s landing gear, Northgraves said.
The Rockland Fire Department, the Owls Head Fire Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded.
