AUBURN — A Leeds man accused of firing a gun during an argument earlier this week was released from custody on $1,000 cash bail.

Bud Madrid Roddy, 40, of Country View Drive was ordered not to have or use alcohol, illegal drugs or any weapons, including firearms, as conditions of his release from Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department custody Tuesday.

Roddy was arrested Monday night and charged with felony reckless conduct with a firearm as well as criminal threatening and violation of condition of release.

Authorities may search him or his vehicle at any time for any of those things he is barred from possessing, according to court papers.

The charges stem from an altercation on Monday night in a public roadway in which two neighboring families were feuding over a Saturday night incident there.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Raymond Lafrance said Roddy’s family had an ongoing dispute with the Beaule family, which lives on a neighboring property in Greene.

Terms of Roddy’s release include no contact with six members of the Beaule family and two others, according to court papers.

Lafrance said he expects others involved in the Monday night confrontation may be charged as the investigation into the incident continues.

On Saturday, the Beaules complained to police that the Roddy family had trespassed on their property on Line Road in Greene, Lafrance said. Deputies continue to investigate assault complaints from that weekend dispute which flared up again Monday night.

The Beaule family had company Monday night, Lafrance said. They were getting ready to leave to attend a sports event at the same time the Roddy family went to fetch their mail. A fight ensued in the road with baseball bats, each side claiming the other started the fight, witnesses said.

According to reports, Roddy went home and returned to the fight with a gun, which he fired several times at the Beaules and their friends. He ran home again, then fled into nearby woods and was arrested after authorities spotted him with night-vision glasses, Lafrance said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Maine State Police responded to the scene.

“The violence has just been getting worse and worse,” Lafrance said.

Three people, including Roddy, were taken to a Lewiston hospital, Lafrance said. Roddy apparently posted bail while in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department at the hospital on Tuesday.

Lafrance said his department has been fielding complaints about the Roddys from various neighbors for several years.

Keith Comeau of Leeds, a friend of the Beaules who witnessed Monday night’s clash, said he was concerned about Roddy’s release from jail, suggesting the bail was much too low.

“What’s up with that?” he asked. “That’s ridiculous.”

Comeau said the Roddys were the aggressors. “Let’s just say they got what they deserved,” Comeau said.
