PORTLAND (AP) — Portland has installed its bicycle corral with a goal of boosting business by giving cyclists a place to put their bikes.

Mayor Michael Brennan and city officials on Friday are celebrating what could be the first of several bicycle corrals. The pilot location is between Arabica Coffee Company and Rosemont Market and Bakery on Commercial Street.

Bruce Hyman, the city’s bicycle and pedestrian program coordinator, says the corral was put at a location with a customer base that bicycles but lacks bicycle parking.

That’s the idea. The program is aimed at transforming underutilized street space to more functional uses in business districts that currently lack enough bike parking.
