1915 – 2014
New Gloucester—William H. Greeley, 99, of New Gloucester and formerly of Needham, Mass., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 21. Since July he had resided at The Highlands in Topsham.
Born in Newton, Mass., Mr. Greeley graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston in 1937 and Vesper George School of Art in 1939, with a degree in industrial design.
In the 1940s Mr. Greeley worked as a draftsman for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corp. in East Hartford, Conn. Subsequent jobs included engineering and drafting at Victory Plastics, Hudson, Mass., and plant engineer at Beckwith Arden, Inc., a manufacturing firm in Watertown, Mass.
Since retiring to their family home in New Gloucester in 1972 with his wife, Mal, Bill was active in a number of town efforts including the town’s growth management and planning committees. He liked helping Mal in their gardens with spring daffodils, raspberries, blueberries, apple trees and vegetables. In winter Bill enjoyed woodworking projects and preparing his annual handmade block print holiday cards. Throughout the year he enjoyed his daily walk around the lower corner village.
Surviving are son, William H. Greeley Jr. of Marblehead, Mass.; daughter, Jane John of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Andrew Greeley, Seth John and Elizabeth John; and his great-granddaughter, Cecilia Marie John.
