100 years ago, 1914
The steam auto truck, used by the Highland Spring Company to deliver water and ginger ales, stirred things up on Main street, Lewiston, near Sabatis, Thursday noon. It had been left standing, the brakes were set and the power was shut off. As near an can be learned some of the pupils of school, near there, got to playing around the automobile and released the brake. The car started and with no one at the steering wheel, it followed an erratic course. It dodged the watering trough, was dodged by a number of teams and some autos. Next it took a shy at the sidewalk and gave pedestrians a fright. At Bates and Main streets it smashed into a post.
50 years ago, 1964
Formation of the Poland Spring Bottling Corporation, to bottle and market products of the original Hiram Ricker & Sons springs in Poland Spring, was announced today by Ralph Cutting, the president. Cutting discussed future plans, and noted that Poland Spring water has been familiar in the United States for over 100 years and is served in such famous spots as the United States Senate Restaurant and the Plaza Hotel in New York. Now it will be distributed more intensively on a world-wide basis in its famous green bottle with the green and white label.

Students of St. Dominic’s Modern Theater and Drama Club members are combining their talents and will present Peter Barnes’ acclaimed serious comedy, “Red Noses.” The action of the play, which occasioned considerable controversy when it opened, has never before been produced by any professional or amateur theater group in Maine. The play takes place in the plague-stricken Europe of 1348.
