WALDOBORO — A bicyclist was struck and killed Saturday night by an alleged drunken driver on Feylers Corner Road in Waldoboro, police said.
Jessie Hayden, 31, had been riding his bike in the road at about 8:30 p.m. when he was hit by driver Jeffrey Moran, 27, according to a press release issued by Chief William Labombarde of the Waldoboro Police Department.
Moran, who was driving a 1999 GMC Yukon, called police at the scene to report he found a bike in the middle of the road and then saw a man lying in the ditch.
“Moran stated the male in the ditch was non-responsive and was not breathing,” the chief said in the press release.
The Waldoboro Ambulance Service and the Waldoboro Police responded to the emergency call, but Hayden was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moran was arrested and charged with Class B criminal operating under the influence and taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail. His bond was set at $10,000, according to the jail’s website.
Maine State Police responded and reconstructed the accident scene, according to the media release, and the Waldoboro Fire Department helped with traffic control and with shutting down a portion of Feylers Corner Road.
The case remains under investigation, police said.
