AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine state lawmaker is proposing a new way for the state’s public schools to make up snow days.

Under current law, schools have to make up entire days at a time, by scheduling Saturday classes, scheduling school during April vacation week, or by extending the school year. Schools can also seek a waiver to have fewer than the 175 minimum teaching days.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1FYsHUD ) reported that Rep. William Tuell wants schools to have the option of extending the school day. The East Machias Republican’s proposal made Wednesday in a public hearing before the Legislature’s Education Committee would allow districts to make up one day for every five days students attend class for an additional hour.

Some Maine districts have already had 10 snow days this winter.
