AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King are joining Republican Gov. Paul LePage in urging the federal government to provide assistance to towns still grappling with the costs of the January blizzard.
Collins and King are asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to approve LePage’s request to declare a major disaster and provide federal funding to Maine due to the snowstorm and flooding from Jan. 26 to 28.
The senators say that it has been estimated that the storm caused more than $2.5 million in damage in Androscoggin, Cumberland, Sagadahoc and York Counties. They say the cleanup costs have “exceeded the budgets of many communities throughout the state.”
Collins and King also sent a letter to FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate last month urging him to approve assistance for Washington County.
