Members of the Lewiston High School Key Club began a 100-mile basketball dribble last midnight with the Bangor Auditorium as the goal. The marathon jaunt precedes Saturday night’s Maine Class L championship basketball game between LHS and Stearns High School of Millinocket at Bangor. About 25 key clubbers will swap off dribbling stints during the trip, with each one taking the ball four miles of the distance. The boys are traveling in three groups, with the first contingent taking the nighttime shift. A spokesman said the route will stick principally to the less traveled roads. The journey is scheduled to be completed at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, just prior to the start of the big game.

Lewiston’s police and fire departments are preparing to launch a mail campaign aimed at property owners whose buildings are not marked with street numbers. The effort is targeted “primarily at the outskirts, like the Cotton, College and Chadbourne roads areas,” said police Capt. Edward Carpenter III. Lack of properly displayed street numbers can cause delays during emergencies, he said. The letter residents will receive includes a copy of the city ordinance that requires street numbers to be displayed, and a request signed by Lewiston’s police and fire chiefs to comply with the ordinance.
