MEXICO — On Tuesday evening, the Board of Selectmen voted to separate the Police and Fire Department budgets on the June 9 ballot.
While both had been part of a public safety article in years past, Town Manager John Madigan said the Police Department budget and its reserve account will be one article, and the Fire Department budget and its reserve account another.
The public safety article will still include the budgets for street lights and hydrants.
The discussion to separate the police and fire budgets began weeks ago following a suggestion by fire Chief Gary Wentzell.
Selectmen also voted to approve the Planning Board’s recommendations for the building code ordinance on the June ballot. Madigan said this essentially updates the permit fees.
Also approved for the June ballot was the Planning Board’s recommendation for the Board of Appeals ordinance.
At a prior meeting, selectmen approved placing sex offender and curfew ordinances on the June ballot.
Following the abbreviated meeting Tuesday, selectmen met with members of the Budget Committee for the first of two evenings to fine-tune the proposed municipal budget for 2015-16.
The second meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday downstairs in the Town Hall.
