GRAY — A Gray man was arrested Friday night after nearly striking a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department cruiser and then leading officers on a brief chase.
Zachary Griffin, 26, of Gray, was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, refusing to stop for a police officer, refusing to submit to an arrest or detention, driving to endanger, reckless conduct and carrying a concealed weapon — an unloaded handgun.
According to a Saturday news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Route 202 in Gray at about 9:30 p.m. and warned of a possibly intoxicated driver.
Deputies passed Griffin near Cole Farms restaurant with Griffin nearly hitting the cruiser head-on.
The deputy turned and tried to stop Griffin, but the driver continued north, passing several cars in an alleged attempt to evade deputies. He turned on to Legrow Road, a dead end, was forced to stop and arrested.
Griffin was the only occupant in the truck. The handgun and loose ammunition were found behind the center console.
