NORWAY – Selectmen are expected to open bids April 28 on the $1.2 million reconstruction of lower Main Street, it was announced at Thursday evening’s board meeting.

Bids for the rehabilitation of Danforth Street near the Town Office will be opened May 12.

The combined projects, along with other work such as overlays and refinancing a sewer note that will save the town $60,000, are included in a $1.2 million bond approved by the board Thursday.

The lower Main Street project uses a $400,000 matching state grant. The work includes reconstructing the street and improving drainage and sidewalks from Paris Street to Route 26. The street has a mix of commercial and residential properties, anchored by Stephens Memorial Hospital.

The board also heard from Joe Cummings of Pleasant Street for the second time for an update on his request for help to reduce speed on the street. Town Manager David Holt said the Maine Department of Transportation frowns on speed bumps, but the town could consider a stationary or mobile light.

“It’s a big concern,” Selectman Russ Newcomb said.

Board members said they would like immediate extra police attention on the street while they determine the best route to take.

Sal Girifalco, president of the Norway Lake Association, met with the board to review a plan for paid milfoil inspectors. The inspectors will check boats on a voluntary basis to ensure they are not carrying the invasive plant.

Recreation Department Director Deb Partridge reminded the board that the Don Butters Memorial baseball game will be played May 21 at the Lovejoy Farm Sports Complex. A ceremony at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by the games at 6 p.m. The annual event celebrates the contributions of Butters to the games of baseball and softball in Norway.

The second annual family fishing festival will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 30. The popular event brings scores of people to the Pennesseewassee Dam on Water Street. Organizations will give demonstrations and provide educational material. The Norway-Paris Fish & Game Club will clean any fish and grill them on the spot.

Water Street will be closed at 6:30 a.m. to set up.

John David Mazzeo was back before the board to get a beer and wine license for the Norway Country Club. The course is expected to open at the end of the month, he said.
