By decree of Bishop Walsh of Portland, Lewiston’s French Catholic parish has been divided. The announcement was made Sunday by the Rev. Dellaire, pastor of St. Peter’s. A curate has been appointed for the new parish and will arrive this week. There are 800 families in the second parish and a church will probably be erected in a short time. This parish will include Canal Alley, Hines Alley, Chestnut Street and the mill blocks, Lincoln street as far as Cross street, Cedar and River streets. This will include 800 families and about 4,500 persons.

Former Gov. Percival Baxter has spoken out vigorously against what he considers to be a projected over-development of Baxter State Park, as set forth in a recreation plan for Maine, compiled by the State Park Commission and the National Park Service.
The plan recommends improvement of existing roads and trails, the building of more picnicking and camping facilities, and development of an administration center and a natural history museum. Estimated cost is about $1 million.
But Mr. Baxter says it is “no business” of the State Park Commission to have anything to do with the vast tract he has given to people of Maine, which is administered by an independent agency, the Baxter State Park Authority.

• Perhaps the employees of the company that printed diplomas for Edward Little High School’s graduating class should go back to school themselves – for a spelling lesson.
The roughly 450 diplomas awarded earlier this month proudly proclaim that the students have completed the course of study required for “gradution” from the Auburn school.
