• Local automobilists will be interested to know that the total number of automobiles registered in this state during the present year is 425, and the number which have been registered since the law went into effect in the spring of 1906 is 1810. The applications for registration are still coming in fast, and it will not be long at the present rate before the number registered in the state will pass the 2,000 mark.

• Tuesday, June 18, holds the record for being the hottest for the time of year for a great many years. The figures taken at the gatehouse every hour show that the hottest hour of the day by that thermometer, which was in the shade, was at three o’clock in the afternoon when it registered 97 degrees.

50 years ago, 1957

RICHMOND – Dead alewives “as thick as mud” covered the banks of the Kennebec River today as they succumbed to low river water levels and high temperatures. The fish run up this central Maine river every year to spawn. The young normally stay in the river all summer and go to sea in the fall.

• The weather in the Twin Cities was perfect for yesterday’s opening day at the public playgrounds. Both Lewiston and Auburn playgrounds reported swarms of children, and most of the morning was spent registering them. Total registration was about 975 in Auburn, and in Lewiston the total registration is yet known.

25 years ago, 1982

• After nearly three years of operation, the Auburn Mall is doing better than expected, despite a prolonged public focus on the revitalization of Lewiston’s retail section of Lisbon Street.

• National Sweet Cherry Week, June 21-27, has been set aside to remind everyone that the time to enjoy those delicious, sweet cherries is during the first few weeks of summer when they are available.

• The first phase of Auburn’s riverfront beautification project is roughly 50 percent complete, but work cannot advance further until the city purchases other properties in the Roak Block area.
