HEBRON — Nancy Mason, a genetic genealogist from Cumberland, recently briefed the Hebron Historical Society her field of expertise.
With over thirty years of experience in genealogy research, she explained how DNA testing can help the public discover the origins of their maternal and paternal lines. Using three types of DNA, genealogical information people have concerning possible relatives can be confirmed or corrected.
The tests can help find unknown family lines in cases of adoption or separations from biological lines by comparing results with other individuals’ results. Mason explained. They can also help find relatives with whom you share a common ancestor. To illustrate her discussion, she explained how such testing actually proved genetic ties relevant to her own family history.
The next Society meeting will feature historian Ben Conant speaking on the 18th century physician Dr. Peter Brooks. Records indicate he was a respected practitioner of herbal medicine in Hebron and neighboring towns during that period. This will be at the Town Office, 351 Paris Road, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. The public is invited.
