WATERVILLE (AP) — Fire officials in central Maine say state inspections did not contribute to two carnival ride accidents that occurred over the past week.

Joseph Thomas, the state fire marshal, said Sunday the rides are inspected annually when they are first installed. He says 20 rides at Waterville’s Head of Falls Park, where the accidents happened, were inspected the week before the accidents.

Thomas says his office is investigating Friday’s Dragon Wagon accident in which three children were injured when two cars decoupled and crashed into each other.

He says Saturday’s accident, in which a woman fell off a swing ride, was “rider error.” He says the woman unfastened a safety belt and tried to get off the ride before it stopped.
