AUBURN — Police said a 32-year-old Canton man has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon after he grabbed the steering wheel from his wife, causing their SUV to slam into rocks beside Route 108 in Livermore in August.
Dale Doughty was indicted Tuesday by an Androscoggin County grand jury on those charges, plus a charge of driving to endanger. If convicted, he faces 20 years in jail and up to $30,000 in fines.
According to initial reports of the accident, Maine State Police Trooper Nathan Jamo said Dianne Doughty, 41, was driving the couple’s Jeep Liberty toward Canton about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Her husband, who was sitting in the passenger seat, pulled on the steering wheel, forcing the vehicle off the road, he said.
According to Jamo, Dale Doughty told him he expected the crash to kill himself and his wife. She told police her husband had made suicidal statements before grabbing the wheel.
The couple was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of injuries. She was treated for hip and head injuries, and he was arrested when he was released from the hospital two days later.
He has held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
