1935 – 2015

PORTLAND — Gilbert G. Levasseur, 80, of Sanford died on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a period of declining health.

Gil was born on Sept. 9, 1935, to Alfred and Adrienne (Allaire) Levasseur in Sanford, where he grew up and attended local schools. In 1957, he married Joan Pelletier and together they shared 58 years of marriage and raised four children.

He proudly served for 10 years in the National Guard and was employed for 35 years at Central Maine Power until his retirement in 1995.

Gil was a devout Catholic and had been member of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish. He was also very active at St. Thomas School when his children were young.

He enjoyed woodworking and crafting furniture that is now cherished by his children and their families. Gil raised racing pigeons for 40 years and had been an active member of the Sanford Racing Pigeon Club. He also enjoyed vegetable- and flower-gardening, working around his house and going hunting with his sons.

Gil was a quiet man who liked spending time at home with his family. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Levasseur of Sanford; four children, Michael Levasseur of Auburn, Dennis Levasseur of Shapleigh, Patrick Levasseur and his wife, Kathy, of Springvale and Rebecca Levasseur and her husband, Stephen LaFrance, of Sanford; three granddaughters, Megan Gay and her husband, Matthew, of Springvale, Brittany Hersom and her husband, Christopher, of North Berwick, and Hillary Provencher of Sanford; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Sawyer; and many nieces and nephews.
