PORTLAND — Leavitt Area High School senior Adam Smith will have plenty to reflect on during senior night festivities tonight in Turner.
Smith, a lineman, has been hospitalized since last Saturday after suffering a shattered spleen during a game against Greely in Cumberland. On Friday, according to our media partners at WGME, Smith went home, and is planning on attending the Hornets’ senior game festivities before kickoff against Spruce Mountain at 7 p.m.
According to the report, Smith is walking around.
“Really, I didn’t think I was going to be able to get out for a while, but it’s amazing the progress I’ve been making,” Smith told a reporter. “They did a really great job taking care of me and I really think that’s a big part of it.”
During Senior Night, the school will recognize all the seniors on the football team and call their names. A car will drive Smith onto the field and he’ll be able to walk from there when they call his name.
As Kalle Oakes of the Sun Journal first reported Sunday, Smith suffered the Grade 5 splenic injury in the second half of the game, when he was struck in the abdomen during a kick return.
After collapsing to the turf, Smith was helped to his feet and walked to the Hornets’ sideline, where he again went to the ground.
Marco Madison, an assistant coach for Leavitt, assessed the situation and summoned a doctor on the Greely staff. That caregiver, Dr. Kate Quinn of Maine Medical Partners Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, arranged for immediate transport to the hospital.
Assistant coach Chris Gray posted on social media that medical personnel “almost lost” Smith during transport.
By Monday, Smith was upgraded to fair condition, and has made steady progress all week long.
Friday, he’ll be back in his element, surrounded by many who lent their support over the past week.
