DEAR SUN SPOTS: If you are interested in fiber arts such as knitting, crocheting, hooking rugs, needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery and making lace, we are seeking people who want to share what they know with others or who want to learn these fiber arts. We also would like people to help us continue our Purple Crying Baby project. Over the past two years we have knitted and donated over 500 newborn-size hats to area hospitals letting new parents know that there is help if their new baby cries a lot or gets purple in the face as they cry. This group meets from 6-7 p.m. at the Zadoc Long Free Library, 5 Turner Street in Buckfield, on Wednesday evenings. Our next meeting is Nov. 11.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything advertised for a bunco game night. It was held a few times a year by a local nonprofit. Can you find out if there are any bunco games scheduled? Thank you. — Bunco player in Lewiston.
ANSWER: Sun Spots knows of one local nonprofit that hosts an occasional bunco game. A few days ago, we received this press release: The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County will host an evening of bunco at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4. Bunco can be a lot of fun and easy to learn. The evening will begin with instruction and practice before the real playing begins.
This event will take place at the historic Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., and is open to the public. Members each pay a $5 donation at the door and non-members $10 each. Reservations are required as seating is limited.
Light snacks and prizes will be provided. A used book sale will also take place during Bunco as well as early raffle sales for the upcoming Winterberry Fair.
All donations help WLU maintain the historic Foss Mansion as well as give scholarships to local students.
Organized in 1892, the Woman’s Literary Union is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to further the intellectual, cultural and educational advancement of its members and the community and preserve the nationally registered Foss Mansion.
For more information, visit www.facebook.com/womansliteraryunion.
Reservations are required. Email denisescammon@gmail.com or call 207-753-0931.
In addition to the November bunco event, WLU plans to host bunco events in January and April.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I enjoyed attending concerts at the basilica this summer when I visited my family in Lewiston. Are there any concerts coming up in the next few weeks as I am visiting again? Thank you for your helpful service. — Music-loving visitor.
ANSWER: At 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, Maine Friends of Music will perform “Baroque and Beyond,” a free public concert at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 122 Ash St. This program will include Vivaldi’s Trio in A Minor, Bach’s Flute Sonata #1, Rodrigo’s Four Madrigals of Love, as well as works by Scarlatti, Gershwin, and others.
Maine Friends of Music, a professional chamber ensemble, features flutist Linda Brunner, keyboardist Sean Fleming, and bassoonist David DeBolt. This highly pedigreed trio has performed internationally as well as in a variety of Maine musical venues. While the majority of their repertoire is 18th-century Baroque, they also include later works and new musical compositions.
They will be joined by soprano Mary Sullivan, Maine Friends of Music’s 2015 guest artist.
