LEWISTON — The Lewiston High School boys’ soccer team turned heads earlier this season when, as the Sun Journal first reported in September, the Blue Devils cracked USA Today’s top 25 national boys’ soccer poll.
The team has done nothing but improve against tougher competition since late September, and this week has reached another pinnacle, not only at USA Today, but also with Top Drawer Soccer.
In the Week 9 Super 25 expert rankings at USA Today, Lewiston moved up four places, from 24th to 20th. The list was compiled before the end of the regular season, with Lewiston’s record listed at 13-0. The Blue Devils have won twice since then, defeating Class A North runner up Hampden Academy to end the regular season, and again in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship game.
Another poll that has listed Lewiston for a few weeks is the Top Drawer Soccer regional poll. Top Drawer is a national site dedicated to promoting high school, prep and college soccer. Three weeks ago, Lewiston cracked the site’s Top 10 for the Northeast region, and this week climbed to its highest position yet in the regional survey, moving up from fifth to third. Suffield High School of West Suffield, Conn., and La Salle Academy of Providence, R.I., are the two schools rated higher than Lewiston as of Monday.
The Blue Devils open the 2015 playoffs Tuesday, hosting rival Edward Little in a Class A North quarterfinal at Don Roux Field in Lewiston.
