PERU — Three residents, including one of the town’s selectmen, are running for a road commissioner position during the Nov. 3 state referendum ballot, Secretary Angela Barkhouse said.
Barkhouse said that residents Maurice Brann and Brad Hutchings took out papers to run for the open road commissioner position, and that Selectman Lee Merrill also took out papers for the position.
Merrill was elected to the Board of Selectmen in April 2013.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said Friday that if Merrill were elected as road commissioner, he would “immediately resign from his position as selectman.”
“I told the board that if this were to happen, they should try and elect another selectman as soon as possible,” Parent said. “I recommended that they try and fill the position by the beginning of January. It’s tough to do things with a four-person board.”
