1920 – 2015
LEWISTON — Esther G. Shapiro, 95, formerly of Labbe Avenue in Lewiston, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 15, at Montello Manor with family at her side.
She was born in Malden, Mass., July 2, 1920, a daughter of Philip and Lillian Bluestein Glaser. Esther was educated in Massachusetts schools, graduated from Boston University with a degree in teaching and also attained her master’s degree in education from the University of Southern Maine.
In1948, she married Isadore Shapiro and together they settled in the Lewiston-Auburn area to raise their family.
Esther taught ninth-grade English in the Lewiston school system for many years until her retirement.
In retirement, she volunteered regularly in the library at Longley Elementary school and served for many years on the Board of the Friends of the Lewiston Public Library.
She was an active member of Beth Abraham Synagogue for many years and more recently, at Temple Shalom. Esther was an avid reader and also enjoyed swimming, doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and baking.
Esther was a loving, devoted and hardworking wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.
She leaves behind her son, Philip Shapiro and his wife, Jeannie, of Westwood, Mass.; her daughter, Dr. Deena Shapiro and her husband, Dr. Timothy Soncrant, of Maryland; four grandchildren, Alysson Shapiro, Tracy Rose Shapiro, David Soncrant and Andrew Soncrant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
